A strong start begins with attendance

Attendance matters. Every day a student is in school is an opportunity to learn, build relationships, participate in classroom experiences, and develop skills that support future success. During Attendance Awareness Month, Snohomish School District encourages families to understand attendance expectations and plan ahead when extended absences are necessary.

A pre-arranged absence is any planned absence from school lasting three or more consecutive school days. Families must submit a pre-arranged absence request form so the school can review the request and determine whether the absence qualifies as excused under District Policy 3122.

Whenever possible, families should submit the form at least one week before the planned absence. This allows school staff time to review the request and communicate any next steps. Forms are available in school front offices, on school and district websites, or by request from school staff.

While some vacations or travel may be approved as excused absences if they meet district criteria and receive principal approval, families are strongly encouraged to schedule travel during non-school days whenever possible. Absences that do not meet the criteria outlined in Policy 3122 or are not approved by the principal will be considered unexcused.

Students who miss school remain responsible for completing missed assignments and coursework. Teachers are not required to provide assignments or instructional materials in advance of a prearranged absence, although they may choose to do so. Upon returning, students should reconnect with teachers, review missed content and complete any required make-up work.

Even a few missed days can make it challenging for students to stay current with classroom instruction. By planning ahead and communicating early with your school, families can help minimize disruptions to learning and support student success. For questions about attendance procedures, timelines, or prearranged absence forms, please contact your school's front office or attendance secretary.

If attendance challenges arise, please contact your school. We are committed to working with families to identify supports and help students stay connected to learning. Learn more at www.sno.wednet.edu/attendancematters.
